Bruce Katz to Share Insights on how COVID-19 has Highlighted Local Power
at MBEP’s 6th Annual State of the Region
Bruce Katz, Founding Director, Nowak Metro Finance Lab at Drexel University, will join Monterey Bay Economic Partnership’s (MBEP’s) 6th Annual State of the Region to share insights into how COVID-19 has highlighted the power of local communities. Katz is widely regarded as the foremost expert in shifting demographic and market trends and policies that are critical to metropolitan prosperity and new forms of metropolitan governance. He will be providing an update to his presentation at MBEP’s 2019 Regional Economic Summit with a specific focus on the impacts of COVID-19. Other speakers will explore other critical issues for the Monterey Bay region, such as broadband access for all, creating forest resilience, housing, and local investing.
Speakers: Bruce Katz, Founding Director, Nowak Metro Finance Lab at Drexel University, will be followed by Dr. Micah Weinberg, Chief Executive Officer for California Forward, who will discuss how California is building an equitable and resilient recovery. Jessica Morse, Deputy Secretary for Forest Resources Management at the California Natural Resources Agency, will speak about her in-depth knowledge about fire management and lessons learned from this year’s fire siege, including specific strategies implemented to make our state more fire resilient. She will also share some innovative solutions around biomass and the economic, social, and environmental benefits it provides.
Lightning Rounds: These short inspiring talks will address the important topics of broadband access, progress on a vaccine for COVID-19, and the importance of local investing.
Fireside Chat: California State Senator, Anna Caballero will address the next steps for housing in California.
Community Impact Award: This year’s award is given in recognition of leaders from across the region who have demonstrated enormous community impact in battling 2020’s incredible fire siege. Accepting on behalf of their colleagues are David Fulcher, CalFire San Benito/Monterey Unit Chief, Michael Urquides, Monterey Regional Fire Chief, Jonathan Cox, CalFire San Mateo Division, Deputy Chief and Chris Clark, Santa Cruz County Chief Deputy, Sheriff’s Office.
“We wanted to recognize key leaders of the local fire teams in our region. They did an amazing job organizing such chaos in a short period of time, and keeping the public updated on the latest information with the operational meetings and press conferences,” said MBEP board member and President and CEO of Bay Federal Credit Union, Carrie Birkhofer. “It’s a great example of building teams, coordinating diverse groups, communications, action planning, and accomplishing goals in a very volatile situation.”
Virtual Platform: Our fully interactive, online format for the State of the Region offers so much more than a standard webinar or streamed event, facilitating high-value connections through easy search filters, direct messaging, and more. Once registered, participants can build their profile so as to interact with colleagues, reconnect with old friends, and make new connections.
