Assembly Housing Working Group

Makes a Stop in the Salinas Valley

On Oct. 4, MBEP, in partnership with the Office of Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D-Salinas), hosted the Assembly Housing Working Group in East Salinas as a part of a statewide housing tour. The objective of this working group is to understand the challenges, as well as possible solutions, in addressing California’s housing crisis in order to inform 2022 housing legislation.

Focused on the unique housing issues our region faces, the panel for this stop was comprised of local affordable housing development experts, as well as community leaders. Matt Huerta (MBEP), Joanna Carman (MidPen Housing), Dr. Carissa Purnell (Alisal Family Resource Centers), and Jane Barr (Eden Housing) each detailed the conditions residents on the Central Coast face when it comes to housing and affordability, highlighting the acute hardship that falls on local agricultural workers.

Assemblymembers Chris Ward (D-San Diego), Tim Grayson (D-Concord), Mia Bonta (D-Alameda), Laura Friedman (D-Burbank), Eloise Reyes (D-Grand Terrace), and Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland), as well as local stakeholders, were in attendance and engaged in a roundtable discussion after the panel presentations. Several specific new financing ideas and land use policy changes were discussed to streamline more affordable housing for farmworker families.

To conclude the visit in Salinas, legislators visited the Los Abuelitos Senior Apartments, developed by CHISPA, a local affordable housing developer. Completed in 2006, the Los Abuelitos Senior Apartments are an excellent example of safe, decent, and affordable homes for seniors in Salinas, including units reserved for seniors who were previously farmworkers.

Assemblymember Robert Rivas will share a summary of the findings from the statewide housing tour at MBEP’s State of the Region conference on Oct 29.
