New Features and Partners Increase Impact of Monterey Bay Career Connect
(October 8, 2018) -Marina, CA- A valuable tool for students just got better. Monterey Bay Career Connect (MBCC), a free online resource to help guide students and families towards local educational programs and career opportunities in the region, has added additional features and partners to make this powerful tool even better. Made possible due to a collaborative effort of organizations across the Monterey Bay region, MBCC was incubated by Monterey Bay Economic Partnership (MBEP) and Bright Futures Education Partnership (Bright Futures).
MBEP and Bright Futures are now working with six cost-share colleges in the region to provide inclusive college curricula to students through the Monterey Bay Career Coach website. Each college; Monterey Peninsula College (MPC), California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), Hartnell College, Central Coast College, Cabrillo College and Brandman University, provides up-to-date information on career paths that map to the college curricula available to students in the region. Additional sponsors include Santa Cruz County and Monterey County Offices of Education, and the Santa Cruz and Monterey County Workforce Development Boards.
A new Work Opportunities feature was recently added to MBCC allowing MBEP members, MBCC sponsors, and college cost-share partners to post employment opportunities for free on the site. Employers are able to add job postings, and download applicant resumes. There is also an new Local Scholarships tab that provides information and links to local scholarships and award programs.
MBCC “levels the playing field” by providing free online resources to help guide any student and their families towards local educational programs and career opportunities. Resources include Monterey Bay Career Coach where students can take a free career assessment, explore careers based on their results, and browse available academic college-level programs. With the Resume Builder, users can login to build and save multiple resumes to their profile and apply for jobs within the site all for free. Alison Shelling, Pathways Specialist, with Monterey Peninsula College says “Monterey Bay Career Coach is a user-friendly way to explore careers along with education choices and job opportunities in the Monterey Bay Area.”
Pre-and post surveys with high school students indicate that MBCC is inspiring students to attain post-secondary education. As one example, during pre-surveys, when asked “In college, my goal is to earn …” 60% of students responded ‘I don’t know yet’; after using the site, 50% responded their goal was to earn a bachelor’s degree. One local college student reported, “The [Monterey Bay] Career Coach website is really user friendly. I like how I can take the career assessment and get suggestions. The jobs they suggested are very helpful.” Echoing this sentiment, a Costanoa High School Student said, “The Career Coach site is really cool! I like the way it shows the local wages for careers I’m interested in.”
“Cabrillo is very pleased to be a member of the Monterey Bay Career Connect network that supports our students’ career path journey. Career Coach is a tool that helps guide our students every step of the way from career exploration to employment. Career Coach helps students get on the career path that is right for them. It empowers students to make informed career choices and work towards their dream career by enrolling in a college that offers courses in their chosen career field.”-Gerlinde Brady, Dean of Career Technical Education & Workforce Development, Cabrillo College
